This morning was a contrast of sorts.
Not too long ago I saw a smug American extolling the virtues of the partisan crowd in boosting sporting performance. Oh, how the incoming Europ.... sorry, yooropeens would be given a rough ride when they arrived. I was intrigued, at least until I discovered it was about a golf game that was being payed 'over there', and I lost interest. Subliminally I became aware of a mighty rout of Yoorups' golf guys and more smugness of the 'Mrkn persuasion. This morning I find that Yoorup did something good and Wood splintered, or something. The spirit of Ballesteros was invoked, or evoked, I'm still unclear as to which, and them pesky 'Mrkns lost by a splinter.
Given the overall cuddliness generated by the Olympic games this level of European togetherness in overcoming a bigger, richer and more confident nation actually made me grin, and I don't even like golf!
On the other hand, that icon of Britishness, Jimmy Saville, seems to have hit the buffers. The least said about him the better, I think.
